History of Chessmen
: Isle of Lewis Chessmen pieces are very unusual, rare ones found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland in early 1800's but believed to be carved in Walrus Tusk circa 1280 in Norway or Iceland. These Romanesque (relating to style prevailing in Europe c. 900-1220) visage being the only of its kind in the history of medieval Art. There seem to be no other chess pieces compared with these forceful and expressive faces of humans. Most of the experts in chess history believe that these figures of Isle of Lewis Chessmen as most astonishing ancient chessmen collection in existence.
